Superhost

I’m working on some stuff that I heard good things about from last year as well as the year before. Superhost was something that I had heard good things about when it was released on Shudder. I’m glad I was finally able to watch it. This continues the Shudder streak of releasing solid horror movies.

Superhost was written and directed by Brandon Christensen. I’ve not seen anything that he has directed or worked on. The way that he was able to channel the energy of specialty YouTube vloggers, or at least how some of them are. He has a great sense suspense and how to shoot it build the suspense. He wrote an incredibly entertaining movie that was original.

The cast for Superhost is small but incredibly entertaining. It stars Sara Canning, Osric Chau, Gracie Gillam, and Barbara Crampton. The two leads Canning and Chau I knew from being in different CW shows. Canning was in The Vampire Diaries and Chau was in Supernatural. Chau was on the show during one of the times I had fallen out of watching it. Barbara Crampton was someone I had no idea was in this until she was promoting it. How she was used made sense for the story. I had never seen Gracie Gillam before, but she was simply amazing. I hope she keeps working in the genre.

Superhost focuses on Claire and Teddy, a pair of travel vloggers. Their YouTube channel, called Superhost, focuses on what are basically AirBnBs. They’re also a couple as well as business partners. They decide on going to a highly rated place that had been booked constantly, after they finally got a spot. Things are weird as soon as they arrive, and just continue to get weirder and weirder.

The effects in the movie look fantastic. Both the CG and practical are outstanding. The music builds the suspense and atmosphere like it should. The score was done by Blitz/Berlin who had worked on The Void and Psycho Goreman. They do fantastic work.

Superhost is the kind of movie that you should know as little about as you go in. I do want to say that The Rental would work as a fantastic double feature alongside this movie. If you have Shudder, I don’t know if I could recommend this enough. You can watch it on Shudder. I give Superhost 8 DSLR cameras out of 10.
