Spider-Man: Homecoming is so much better than it has any right to be. It was the second time that Spider-Man was rebooted after a huge misstep during the first reboot. This did have the added bonus of being connected to the MCU with this version of Spider-Man having been introduced in Captain America: Civil War. This was the first in a planned trilogy in the MCU, which seems to be continuing past the third movie, which is coming out later this week.
Spider-Man: Homecoming was directed by Jon Watts. It was written by Jonathan Goldstein, John Francis Daley, Jon Watts, Christopher Ford, Chris McKenna, and Erik Sommers with story by Goldstein and Daley. Watts is someone that I had never seen anything from before this, even though he got his start in horror. I was surprised by the amount of writers, just because when it comes to big movies like this the more writers don’t usually equal into high quality. This is not one of those cases.
Spider-Man: Homecoming stars Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Jon Favreau, Gwyneth Paltrow, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Bokeem Woodbine, Tyne Daly, Marisa Tomei, and Robert Downey Jr. Tom Holland is the best of the big screen Peter Parker/Spider-Mans. He is able to portray both sides of the role well, while the previous two were only good at one side of the role. Michael Keaton is just an amazing villain. He can get an incredibly sinister gleam in his eye which just adds to his presence. The rest of the cast is a lot of fun as well. Zendaya is so much fun in her role as a disinterested schoolmate of Peter. Jacob Batalon as Peter’s best friend adds even more levity, but helps keep everything grounded, in the movie.
Spider-Man: Homecoming starts with the aftermath of the final battle of The Avengers with Adrian Toomes being screwed over by the government when it comes to cleaning up New York City. He ends up keeping some of the debris and makes equipment for himself and his crew. It picks up next with the events of Civil War. After a brief recap you next seen Peter dealing with his daily life. It usually consists of school and then him patrolling the city. Peter quits activities at school to make time for his “Stark Internship” which is just his time as Spider-Man. He discovers Toomes’ crew trying to sale the weapons made from the salvage. Peter’s normal life and his life as Spider-Man keep intertwining until it falls apart. Tony Stark offers limited support, leaving it mostly up to Happy Hogan which doesn’t go over well. Spider-Man and The Vulture end up clashing several times.
The CG suit for Spider-Man doesn’t look great some of the time. It looks too bright to be in the shot when it looks off. That’s really the only time that it doesn’t look great. The Vulture looks incredibly menacing. He has two different suits; the larger suit is the most menacing that I’ve ever seen him look. The design for the self-made suit is something I like a lot, possibly because it looks a bit like the original Scarlet Spider suit. The music done by Michael Giacchino is fantastic, like it usually is. The score is just fantastic, which is on par for Giacchino’s scores.
Spider-Man: Homecoming came out at a time when people were unsure if we really needed another Spider-Man movie, and it exceeded expectations. This began the newest trilogy of Spider-Man movies, which had been a nice change of pace from the cosmic level threats like the usual MCU movies. I give Spider-Man: Homecoming 9 Spider-Drones out of 10.
