I had planned on reviewing this movie way back when it was on VoD and in theaters but I am so slow at starting things that it has come out physically before I got to. It’s only been about two months, but it feels like its been so much longer. Nobody is one of the best action movies I’ve seen in the last couple of years. But I would expect no less from a movie written by Derek Kolstad, who wrote the movie. It was directed by Ilya Naishuller, who also directed Hardcore Henry which is another top notch action movie.
The plot centers on Hutch Mansell, played by Bob Odenkirk, a mild-mannered office worker with a wife, played by Connie Nielsen, and two kids, played by Gage Munroe and Paisley Cadorath. He works for his father-in-law, played by Michael Ironside, and is just kind of generally put upon. It really kicks off when his house is broken into and though he has the drop on them he doesn’t take them down, it turns out the gun they have isn’t even loaded. Through his reaction to that event he runs afoul of a Russian mobster, played by Aleksey Serebryakov. He also has backup from his father, played by Christopher Lloyd, and his brother, played by RZA.
Bob Odenkirk plays Hutch with an underlying anger that fits for the character that he’s playing. There’s a noticeable change in his demeanor after he lets loose. He doesn’t seem nearly as angry and he’s just more open with his family. His family doesn’t really get to do much, I do have to say his daughter is one of the most adorable kids that I’ve seen in a movie in quite some time. Seeing Christopher Lloyd in action scenes at his age is pretty awesome. It makes the little kid in me that loved Doc Brown in the Back to the Future films giddy.
The stunt team is kick-ass in this movie. The fight scene on the bus is visceral and you feel every hit land. The driving stunts are outstanding and done amazingly. This is also the only movie I can think of that has an action scene set to a Pat Benatar song, which I guess automatically makes it the best action scene set to a Pat Benatar song by default. The production and set design in the movie also just knocks it out of the park. You get a real feel of the world. The FX used throughout the movie is great. The CG looks fantastic as well as the stuff that is done practically.
If you like the John Wick movies or just like good quality action movies, I say check Nobody out. It’s available either physically or on your digital storefront of choice.
