I really wish that I hadn’t waited so long to watch Get Duked! because I was incredibly entertained by it. I wasn’t expecting to laugh as often or as hard as I did while watching the movie. I hadn’t seen much about it either from when it came out originally or since, which is a shame because Get Duked! is incredibly hilarious and even has a surprising classist twist.
The style of the movie is similar to hip-hop music videos, especially when it comes to certain parts. That makes sense with Ninian Doff’s background in music video direction. Outside of those parts it looks great and makes full use of the Highlands as a setting. There are several shots that show off the isolated nature of the setting.
The setting is as much of a character as any of the cast. Samuel Bottomley, Viraj Juneja, Rian Gordon, Lewis Gribben, Eddie Izzard, Kate Dickie, Georgie Glen, and James Cosmo are hilarious in Get Duked!. Bottomley, Juneja, Gordon, and Gribben carry a lot of the movie since we follow their characters for the majority of the movie. Kate Dickie and Kevin Guthrie were the biggest surprise to me with them being the source of some of the goofier moments in the movie. Izzard and Glen were surprisingly sinister, with Izzard being a huge surprise to me. Also I wasn’t expecting James Cosmo to be as funny as he was but god he was so funny. Everyone in the cast is funny.
The effects are really good. The masks for the Duke and Duchess add an extra bit to the sinister aura of the characters on top of the performances behind them. The visual effects are something else. There’s the drug induced stuff that added to the hip-hop flair that’s throughout the first two acts. The music in Get Duked! is awesome. There’s the hip-hop that’s used throughout but then there’s also the score by Alex Menzies, which gives the movie an action adventure feel.
Get Duked! is an incredibly funny satire that will keep you laughing. This is one of the funniest dark comedies that I’ve seen in a while. There’s definitely a proper horror tinge to certain aspects of the movie but it isn’t front and center. I wish that Amazon Prime Video advertised their movies more because this movie should be mentioned a lot more than it is. I give Get Duked! 9.5 pellets of rabbit poop out of 10.
