This was my second time watching Scare Package and first time watching it without it being the Last Drive-In episode. I had honestly forgotten how much fun Scare Package was. Anthology films tend to be more fun than other movies because they get to play around and be weirder than normal. They also get to experiment since there are so many shorts.
There are seven shorts directed by Aaron B. Koontz, Courtney Andujar, Hillary Andujar, Anthony Cousins, Emily Hagins, Chris McInroy, Noah Segan, and Baron Vaughn. The directors also wrote the shorts along with Cameron Burns and Frank Garcia-Hejl co-writing. There’s not a single segment that drags on in my opinion. Every segment helps the flow of the whole movie feel so fun.
There are so many fantastic performances in these shorts that I can’t list them all. Jeremy King, Hawn Tran, Jessie Tilton, Chelsey Grant, Zoe Graham, Chase Williamson, and Joe Bob Briggs. I should also mention Dustin Rhodes because his work as the killer in the final segment is awesome. He uses his years of pro wrestling make his physicality even more purposeful. Seeing Joe Bob play himself was a lot of fun and the fact that he’s allowed to be so funny while poking fun at certain aspects of horror fandom is so incredibly enjoyable. He also has such a fun chemistry on screen with Jeremy King. Each time they interacted with each other I couldn’t help but laugh.
The effects used throughout Scare Package are awesome. There are so many inventive kills that I couldn’t help but be wowed by what I saw on screen. The creature effects used in “One Time In The Woods” are fantastic and goopy in the best way. The costume and set design are fantastic for each of the segments. I also really appreciate the design for Rad Chad’s logo being so heavily inspired by The Last Drive-In’s logo. The music for the movie is fantastic. The different themes for the movie and segments have the best feel to them.
Scare Package is an anthology that you’ll have a lot of fun watching. I had wanted to make sure to give it a rewatch because of the sequel coming out on the 23rd. I can only imagine that it will be just as much fun as this movie was. This is a Shudder Original and is so much fun. I give Scare Package 9.5 videocassettes out of 10.
