Blood Relatives

Blood Relatives was a surprise in multiple ways. I didn’t even know that it even existed until Shudder tweeted about it, which intrigued me greatly. I’m a huge fan of Noah Segan as an actor and dug his segment in Scare Package. I didn’t really know anything about the movie outside of what the synopsis revealed, which doesn’t reveal anything major.

I have to appreciate the story that Noah Segan was able to tell throughout Blood Relatives. I wasn’t expecting a heartfelt father daughter comedy that just happened to be centered on vampires. I was expecting a vampire horror comedy that just happened to be centered on a father daughter pair. I was pleasantly surprised by the whole of the movie and I even had to pause it because I was laughing too hard to focus on the movie.

Victoria Moroles and Noah Segan have amazing chemistry with each other. You really feel the strained and burgeoning relationship between them. I was surprised by how well they played off of each other and how they were able to shift between comedy and drama seamlessly. Akasha Villalobos, Ammie Masterson, Tracie Thoms, Doug Benson, and Josh Ruben are just some of the fantastic supporting cast. Both Benson and Ruben were complete surprises to me. I was completely shocked when both of them popped up. Everyone in the cast plays their parts really well and exactly the way you want them to.

Music plays a huge part in Blood Relatives, and I have to appreciate the care taken for the music. Robert Allaire did the original soundtrack but there’s a lot of other music and it all works so well. The costume design gives you hints at each of the characters. The visual effects aren’t he best but they aren’t glaringly bad. They are perfectly serviceable and take nothing away from the rest of the movie. The practical effects look good, which isn’t a surprise with practical effects.

Blood Relatives isn’t exactly what I was expecting but its an incredibly entertaining movie. There are hints at a wider world that was created by Noah Segan and maybe even connected to his segment in Scare Package. I could be reading too much into it but that’s what I like to think is going on in the movie. I keep enjoying the original movies that Shudder releases. I give Blood Relatives 7.5 leather jackets out of 10.
