Slice

Slice is a weird movie. I didn’t know what I was getting into as I started it. I had learned in the time between its release and now that werewolves were involved in the movie but knew absolutely nothing about it otherwise. The fact that it’s a comedy but a lot of the characters are basically straight men. The situations are some of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever seen but the characters act like it’s perfectly normal.

Austin Vesely wrote and directed Slice and as far as I know it’s the only movie that he’s made. The world that he made for the movie is really interesting. The fact that supernatural entities are just out in the open and aren’t really treated like a big deal is wild. With ghost even having their own part of town, “cleverly” called Ghost Town. I found myself enthralled and confused by the story of Slice, but not in a bad way. The performances really help ground the insanity of the movie.

The cast of Slice is surprisingly stacked. Zazie Beetz, Chance Bennett, Rae Gray, Marilyn Dodds Frank Katherine Cunningham, Will Brill, Y’lan Noel, Hannibal Buress, Tim Becker, Joe Keery, Chris Parnell, and Paul Scheer star. Its really Zazie Beetz and Rae Gray’s movie. We spend most of out time with them, especially Gray since her character ties a lot of the storylines together. Chance Bennett, or Chance the Rapper, is pretty good even though I knew he was funny from seeing his SNL segments. The rest of the cast does great with the crazy script.

The effects in Slice are pretty good. The effects for the ghosts are interesting because you can see how they died as well as them having distinct makeup to show that they’re dead. The VFX are cool, more specifically the VFX that are in the climax of the movie. The costume and set design are awesome and help the movie have such an interesting vibe. The music from Ludwig Göransson and Nathan Matthew David is interesting. Some of the music feels much more serious than the movie is.

Slice is a wild movie that I’m honestly still processing. I liked the movie, but I don’t know if I would recommend it to everyone. Its style of comedy isn’t for everyone and with it being an A24 movie that narrows its target audience even more. If you like the movie, you’ll probably love it. I do wish that there was more werewolf action, but that’s not really the focus of the movie. I watched the movie on HBO Max. I give Slice 6 slices of pizza out of 10.
