The Munsters

I went into The Munsters with an open mind and a willingness to enjoy it. I grew up watching the original The Munsters show and was slightly obsessed with it. I ended up enjoying the movie a lot more than I thought I would. I’ve not been the biggest fan of Rob Zombie’s other movies that I’ve seen but I kept an open mind whenever I would sit down to watch one of his movies.

Zombie’s love for the source material comes through in his writing and directing for the movie. There’s so much about The Munsters that feels like the show even if it looks like the colorized episodes of the TV show. The way he wrote the characters feels spot on and that’s only improved by the performances in those roles. Jeff Daniel Phillips, Sheri Moon Zombie, and Daniel Roebuck do an amazing job of portraying the core three characters. Roebuck’s version of Grandpa hit the mark for me since he was always my favorite character growing up. Both Phillips and Zombie are fantastic as Herman and Lily. I also really enjoyed seeing Richard Brake in something other than a villainous or sinister role. He has a knack for comedy that we don’t get to see enough.

The practical effects are outstanding. They did a fantastic job with all of the creature effects throughout The Munsters. The set and costume design do an amazing job of creating the world in the movie. The music from Zuess fits the movie perfectly.

The Munsters is an interesting prequel and love letter to the original series. I know that I’ve mentioned only the stuff that I liked about the movie so far, but I only had one gripe with it. I felt the length near the end. That’s really the only problem I had with the movie. If it could be cut down without losing any of the goofy 60s inspired charm. It was just added to Netflix. I give The Munsters 8.5 spider engagement rings out of 10. [kofi]
