Insidious: Chapter 3

I’ve decided to go ahead and finish up the Insidious series. I ended up liking Insidious: Chapter 3 a lot more than I thought I would. It being a prequel kind of threw me with how Chapter 2 ended. I did find the story somewhat convoluted with how the characters are set up and brought together. Once everyone is together, which happens more than halfway through the movie, the story really gets going.

Leigh Whannell made his directorial debut in Insidious: Chapter 3. I had seen his other two directorial outings before this one and I loved both of them.  He also wrote this movie, continuing Whannell’s masterminding of the story of the franchise. The story takes place an unknown time before the first movie, which sets it up to be an interesting story.

Lin Shaye, Angus Sampson, and Whannell all return from the previous movies. Dermot Mulroney and Stefanie Scott are the heart of the new cast. Scott, Mulroney, and Shaye all get their time to shine throughout the movie. The version of Elise that we see Shaye play is much different than the character we saw in the previous movies. Michael Reid MacKay is fantastic as the spirit known as “The Man Who Can’t Breathe”.

One thing that helped MacKay’s performance is the effects used for the character. Both practical and VFX do so much to make the spirit terrifying, only improved by the sound design not just for the character but the movie as a whole. The costumes in the movie are really good, especially when it comes to Elise. As the movie goes on she starts dressing in brighter colors, as she comes closer to the character we know from the previous movies. Joseph Bishara returns as the composer again, continuing the motifs from the previous movies.

Insidious: Chapter 3 is a good prequel that uses the characters from the previous movies in interesting ways. The next movie is another prequel to the original two movies and is the last one before the fifth movie, which appears to be a proper sequel to the second movie. I watched Chapter 3 on Tubi, and it was the only place I could find to watch it. So, if you want to watch it you’ll have to watch a few ads. I give Insidious: Chapter 3 8 sweater vests out of 10.
