I will readily admit that I wrote off Orphan when it originally came out. The twist in Orphan was one of the worst kept secrets in movies history, right alongside the twist in The Sixth Sense. It’s so much more than its twist though. There are some fantastic performances in the movie.
Jaume Collet-Serra directed the movie, and the script was written by David Leslie Johnson based on a story by Alex Mace. Orphan was a well-directed movie and the story is unnerving, especially with how many stories in the news have been similar. One of my biggest problems with Orphan is the amount of stupid characters. Some are aggressively stupid while others are willfully ignorant.
The characters are brought to life masterfully by Vera Farmiga, Peter Sarsgaard, Isabelle Fuhrman, CCH Pounder, Jimmy Bennett, Aryana Engineer, and Karel Roden. The performances from Farmiga and Fuhrman are amazing. Both of the performances make the movie be so much more than the twist. Fuhrman had to do some intense stuff at a young age and did so masterfully. Farmiga had to deal with some heart wrenching subject matter all while having to deal with everything else in the scripts. Engineer is absolutely adorable and her being in danger is what I felt was the source of almost all dread. Roden is barely used but is done so quite well.
The practical effects in Orphan are amazing. Making a nine-year-old look incredibly older than that is masterful. All of the effects used to transform Isabelle Fuhrman into Esther are simply amazing. That’s not to mention the computer effects to improve shots. There are also some pretty crazy stunts throughout. The music by John Ottman is great.
Orphan is a good horror movie that got the short end of the stick by the internet when it came out in 2009. The prequel called Orphan: First Kill is coming out on Paramount + today. I wanted to give this a rewatch before watching it. Orphan is streaming on Paramount +. I give Orphan 8 bloody hammers out of 10.
