Alone with You is a movie that I was looking forward to after seeing Barbara Crampton talk about it when it was making the round on the festival circuit last year. I didn’t really know much about it but the trailer got me interested. I didn’t know when I would get to see it until a few days ago when I saw that it was being added to Shudder. I was blown away by what was accomplished in Alone with You.
Emily Bennett and Justin Brooks wrote and directed the movie. I didn’t know the person I was watching onscreen was the director. The performance that she puts in throughout the movie blew me away even before I learned that. Both Bennett and Brooks do an amazing job of directing the movie and working with the cinematography to build tension and tease scares. The few jump scares that happen didn’t both me because I was so engrossed by Bennett’s performance.
Barbara Crampton, Meghan Lane, Dora Madison, and Emma Myles support Emily Bennett in Alone with You. This performance made me absolutely terrified of Barbara Crampton’s laugh and smile. Her usually bright and welcoming smile was tinged with something sinister. Both Madison and Myles have amazing chemistry whenever they interact with Bennett. Everyone in the movie is fantastic and adds so much to it. I also want to mention Barker because they’re a fantastic cat actor.
There are some amazing and subtle effects. That’s not mentioning the practical effects that are fantastic. The more subtle effects are incredibly unnerving because they’re in the background and I wasn’t sure if I actually saw something or not. I only was sure that I saw something when it happened for a second time. The score by Phil Mossman is amazing. The music goes from light and ethereal to intense and driving and it does so with ease.
Alone with You is an incredibly intense movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat. There is a reveal at the end of the movie that you might guess if you’re the kind of person that won’t let yourself have the mystery unfold naturally. I recommend going into the movie with an open mind because you’ll not be let down. You can stream it on Shudder. I give Alone with You 8 gold cross necklaces out of 10.
