I didn’t know what I was getting myself into with Uninvited. This is one of the weirdest movies I’ve seen in a while. I think that comes from it being a movie from the late 80s. I knew vaguely what the movie would be about, but I wasn’t prepared for what would be in it. I vaguely knew because of clips being in the old opening for the YouTube channel GoodBadFlix. Those clips did not prepare me for the unparalleled weirdness of Uninvited.
It was written and directed by Greydon Clark, who directed Without Warning which I reviewed a couple of weeks ago. The story is about a cat that was a lab animal. The experiments cause it to do something absolutely insane and I don’t want to ruin it for anyone that doesn’t know. I wouldn’t want to take that experience away from anyone.
The cast of Uninvited blew my mind when I started watching it. George Kennedy, Clu Gulager, Alex Cord, Toni Hudson, Eric Larson, Clare Carey, Shari Shattuck, and Rob Estes star. Both Carey and Estes were the biggest surprise to me. I didn’t even realize who Estes was until I saw him on screen, because I know his face but not his name. I knew that both Kennedy and Gulager were in it because of the synopsis on Shudder. The majority of the performances are just as wild as the movie, which makes the movie seem even more unhinged.
The effects in Uninvited are definitely something else. There is use of miniatures that make sense with boats being expensive. The effects for the cat are definitely something else. They range from cool to batshit insane. As I still don’t wish to spoil anything about it I won’t say more about the cat. The music by Dan Slider is incredibly 80s and I mean that in the best way.
Uninvited is one of those insane movies that might not even be for all fans of the genre but if you like it, you’ll love it. I think I actually enjoyed the movie more than I thought originally after seeing what I’ve written about it. The transfer that’s on Shudder is from Vinegar Syndrome. The transfer is fantastic, which is on par with everything I’ve seen from Vinegar Syndrome. I give Uninvited 8 genetically altered cats out of 10.
