I would like to say that Prey kicks a whole lotta ass. I had high hopes for it as soon as I started seeing reviews for it being so positive. I went in thinking I would see a fun movie, but I wasn’t prepared for just how good it would be. Prey is a movie that will leave you expecting more from movies that go straight to streaming.
Prey was directed by Dan Trachtenberg with script written by Patrick Aison based on a story by Trachtenberg and Aison. Both Jim and John Thomas get based on credits for being writers of the original Predator. There’s so much to say about the movie. The camera work is masterful and helps make the movie feel a lot bigger than it would with more traditional camera work. The fact that there’s even a completely separate dub for Prey in Comanche shows that there was some care taken for representation for the Comanche Nation. The story takes the franchise back to basics but with characters you’re given time to care about.
Amber Midthunder, Dakota Beavers, Stormee Kipp, Michelle Thrush, Julian Black Antelope, Bennett Taylor, and Dane DiLiegro star. Amber Midthunder is absolutely amazing as the lead of Prey. We’re given so much time with her character Naru that you get to care for her. Naru’s relationship with her brother Taabe is another highpoint with both Midthunder and Beavers having such believable chemistry as brother and sister. The interplay between all of the members of the tribe shows how the entire tribe views Naru, which slowly changes as the movie goes. Dane DiLiegro portrays the Yautja in Prey and is badass. This version is a much more primitive member of the species in terms of the tech.
The design of this version of the Yautja species is much more terrifying than most of the other designs in other movies in the franchise. The practical elements are only amplified by the CG elements throughout the scenes they’re featured. The CG is used to show how the Predator interacts with the world around it and how the world interacts with it. There’s so much in Prey that’s badass that you have to see. The music by Sarah Schachner is fantastic. The score adds an extra tinge of epicness throughout the entire movie.
Prey is an incredibly badass movie that is the best movie in the Predator franchise that’s been released in sometime. I will say that I don’t think there are any bad movies in the Predator franchise, just ones that are less good than others. I feel safe to say that Prey is one of the best entries in the entire franchise. I wish this would get a theatrical release because Prey deserves to be seen in that setting. Prey is streaming exclusively on Hulu. I give Prey 10 tomahawks out of 10.
