I first heard about 1BR when Henry Zebrowski mentioned watching it on an episode of Side Stories which got it on my radar. I had trouble figuring out where I could watch it until the last couple of weeks. As soon as I figured out where I could watch it I made sure that I did so. I’m glad that I did because this is a hell of a horror movie. I had no idea where I was being led throughout the movie, but I didn’t want to look away.
1BR was written and directed by David Marmor. This was his feature directorial debut and he knocked it out of the park with his first movie. The amount of tension that he builds throughout the movie is insane. I had to keep my eyes on the screen so that I didn’t miss anything, even though I also had the urge to look away.
Nicole Brydon Bloom, Giles Matthey, Taylor Nichols, Alan Blumenfeld, Celeste Sully, Susan Davis, Clayton Hoff, Earnestine Phillips, and Naomi Grossman make up the cast of 1BR. Nicole Brydon Bloom is absolutely amazing as the lead of the movie. She’s so emotive that everything that happens to her character Sarah. I don’t want to even possibly give anything away by mentioning the other members of the cast, but the rest do amazing things in their roles.
The set and production designers for the movie did an amazing job at making everything feel off when it had to be. Without giving anything away the audience is clued in that something is not quite right. I also want to mention the effects and how good they were in the movie. A small spoiler is that a cat dies and even though I hated that it happened it worked in the story as a turning point. It also set the mark for the effects and just how effective they would be. The music from Ronen Landa adds an extra bit of tension throughout the movie. The score adds the extra bit of urgency throughout the movie.
1BR is a tension filled horror movie that is the kind of movie that you should go into knowing as little as possible. One of the best things about watching the movie is that its available on several different platforms. You can watch 1BR on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, AMC +, and Shudder. With it being available on so many different platforms it’s a movie that is easy to find. I give 1BR 8.5 sketchbooks out of 10.
