I went into The Prey: Legend of Karnoctus with an open mind. I was given a screen for the movie, and this wouldn’t have been a movie I went out of my way to watch. I ended up enjoying the hell outta Legend of Karnoctus. I kept an open mind as I went into the movie. I like myself a monster movie and this is a fun monster movie.
Legend of Karnoctus was directed by the Hensman Brothers and written by Matthew Hensman and Gustavo Sainz de la Peña. This was the first movie directed by both of the Hensman Brothers. Gustavo Sainz de la Peña had worked with Cire Hensman before but worked with Matthew writing this movie. I think all of them were able to make a fun movie. The Hensman Brothers were able to do a lot with this movie. While the script was flawed it still accomplished a lot.
Nick Chinlund, Kevin Grevioux, Masika Kalysha, Justin Arnold, Ryan McIntyre, Miles Cooper, Mingyu Chu, Matt Musgrove, Ny’acies Divine, Adrian Paul, and Danny Trejo all do a lot with what they were given. Both Paul and Trejo only get what is basically a lengthy cameo, but they are a lot of fun while on screen. One thing that the cast and script were able to do was make everyone surprisingly likable. Chinlund had the least likable character, but he made the most of his character. Musgrove has to do a lot of different things as Sullivan. He had to go from comic relief to high drama to horror quickly and he managed to do that quickly.
I loved the creature design in Legend of Karnoctus so much. I do wish that we go clearer looks at it but what is shown kicks ass. The use of color on Karnoctus is the most striking thing about the creature, mostly because that’s how you get to see it. The music by David Velez is fantastic. The score adds an extreme bit of tension when the drums hit.
The Prey: Legend of Karnoctus is a fun but flawed monster movie that starts out strong but doesn’t completely stick the landing. My overall opinion of the movie is positive even if the ending did leave me feeling a little deflated. It comes out on VOD today. If you’re looking for a fun monster movie that isn’t what you’d normally see, I recommend this movie to you. I give The Prey: Legend of Karnoctus 7.5 crates of gold out of 10.
