So, Alligator 2 kinda sucks. It isn’t completely awful, but it does leave a lot to be desired. That should be expected when there’s an eleven-year gap between the movies. It has moments where it hints at a better movie that it could have been, but it wants do to the same thing as the first movie. This movie wants you to care about the new cop main character, even though there’s no backstory given to make you care about him aside from being married to Dee Wallace Stone’s character.
The script seemed to want to give time to the characters but didn’t want to give the viewers any reason to care about them aside from surface level stuff. Jon Hess did a commendable job with the oddly paced scripts. I was surprised to see he directed this movie because Watchers, another movie he directed, is one of my favorite movies. Curt Allen wrote the script, but I don’t know if a lot of the issues came from a rushed script or rewrites. The plot is basically the same as the first but moved to an unnamed small town.
The cast is pretty wild to me. Alligator 2 stars Joseph Bologna, Dee Wallace Stone, Woody Brown, Harlan Arnold, Nicolas Cowan, Brock Peters, Steve Railsback, and Richard Lynch. There are so many people you’ll recognize if you’re a fan of classic TV. That being said they weren’t given a lot to work with. There’s not a specific character or anything that stands out. This movie does have a whole wrestling subplot. Subplot is probably the wrong way to describe it, because its more like a section since it isn’t mentioned again.
The effects in this movie are pretty okay. They used the same kind of effects as the first movie, even reusing some shots from the first movie. The gore was ramped up and the effects for that gore look good. There were only a couple of times where I noticed reused shots and only one I knew for sure were. The music from Jack K. Tillar is what you would expect from a 90s movie.
Alligator 2 is a kind of boring movie that takes the premise of the first movie and makes it worse. If you’re like me you’ll find yourself getting bored during the dull moments but you’ll also find moments where you get a kick out of the movie. If you just want to watch the first one I could understand that, because it is a much better movie. Alligator 2 is streaming on Shudder. I give Alligator 2 5 giant alligators out of 10.
