Black Mountain Side is a movie that I didn’t know existed until a friend messaged me about it. He convinced me to watch it almost in spite of my past with him and his taste in media. While usually pretty good he had been known to put something on that I had no interest in and leave to do something else around his house. That left me to deal with several things I wouldn’t want to. This is one of the slow burn movies that he enjoys.
Black Mountain Side was written and directed by Nick Szostakiwskyj. The movie isn’t the best, but I’ve seen a lot worse. The cast takes the material seriously and does so quite well. One thing I have to say about the cast is that they are very Canadian. There isn’t a singular member of the cast that I want to specifically mention. I will steer clear of any mention of the plot as to let anyone interested go in as blind as possible.
The effects in the movie are good. The same goes for the production and costume design for the movie. It goes a long way to sell the isolated research station. One of the most interesting things about the movie is that there’s no score. That’s one of the reasons that you get such a feeling of unease. It helps the movie increase tension with ease without having to do anything too crazy.
Black Mountain Side is a very Canadian horror movie that is a slow burn and interesting watch. This is one of the many movies that fill the ad supported streaming services that can be a hit or miss. Thankfully this is more of a hit than anything else. If you want to look it up and see if the brief synopsis intrigues you enough to watch it you won’t be disappointed. I give Black Mountain Side 7.5 artifacts out of 10.
