As soon as I started seeing posts about the first issue of Godzilla vs Mighty Morphin Power Rangers I knew that I would have to get it. At the time I thought it was a one shot rather than a multi-issue comic. The fact that it’s a multi-issue comic lets it get time to breath. This is also the perfect crossover for me and my interests as well as for when I was younger.
Godzilla vs MMPR is being written by Cullen Bunn with art by Freddie E, Williams and color by Andrew Dalhouse. The story falls into the usual crossover trope of heroes meet and fight due to a misunderstanding. I’ll go ahead and say that the writing isn’t necessarily all that great, but it isn’t terrible. It’s probably written this way to get into the action as soon as possible. That’s how I feel about the art, but it’s saved by the colorist. The kaiju and zords look great but the rangers are too overly muscular in my opinion. The humans and other monsters look good too. So, my main issue is the look of the rangers.
The first two issues of Godzilla vs MMPR are a fun start to a crossover that makes a lot of sense. This is a team up between Boom! Studios, IDW Publishing, Hasbro, and Toho. This is a five-issue crossover that looks to be ending in July. If you’re a fan of either of these properties, you’ll have a good time reading these comics. I give the first two issues Godzilla vs Mighty Morphin Power Rangers 7 power coins out of 10.
