The Northman

I feel like I have a weird way of thinking about Robert Eggers. I feel like his movies are the cinematic form of literary fiction. The main difference is that Eggers movies are way less frustrating. The Northman is the most approachable of his movies and while I say that without having seen The Lighthouse his first movie is pretty intense and far from approachable.

The Northman was directed by Robert Eggers and was written by Sjón and Eggers. I think the influence of another person made the movie be much more approachable. While there is a lot of magical realism in the movie it doesn’t make the movie become completely surreal. The way everything plays together throughout the movie makes it easy to follow. The movie is beautifully shot and looks amazing.

Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Björk, and Willem Dafoe star in the movie. There are also people from Eggers’ other movies and when I noticed the first person, I kept looking for others. Skarsgård carries the movie on his very muscular shoulders. Between the intensity of his performance and the intensity of his workout he put in so much work that it is honestly ridiculous. Bang plays the perfect foil for Skarsgård, and they play off each other incredibly well. Possible mild spoilers so possibly skip the next sentence. This is also the most sinister I’ve seen Kidman, though I’ve not seen His Dark Materials so keep that in mind.

The CG effects in the movie are beautiful. I also want to mention that I heard about the CG genitals added to the naked swordfight, which I couldn’t tell that they were added. I will admit that I really looked during the fight. I also want to mention that Night Blade is an absolutely beautiful looking sword. Whoever forged that sword is amazing. The set and production designers just knocked it out of the park. The music from Robin Carolan and Sebastian Gainsborough is great.

The Northman is a good movie that won’t be for everyone, but it will be an experience if seen in theaters. This was my first time seeing a Robert Eggers movie in theater and I would recommend that so much. While it wasn’t as violent or bloody as I was expecting from what I had heard, there is still plenty of both to go around. The Northman came out on April 22 and see it in theaters if you can. I give The Northman 9 Night Blades out of 10.
