The first season of Jessica Jones is one of the best seasons of television that Marvel put out before they started producing the shows on Disney +. Most all of the series connected to The Defenders had to deal with being lesser-known characters to people outside of the comics community. Jessica Jones had one of the easier jobs since two of the leads were in shows that were absolutely huge, with one of them still being a fan favorite among the fanbase.
The first season is anchored by Krysten Ritter and David Tennant portraying two opposing forces that you can’t help but watch. Ritter plays the titular role, and she has such a natural charisma that you can’t help but root for her. It also doesn’t hurt that you want her to get revenge on Kilgrave. Tennant plays Kilgrave, who looks different than his comic book counterpart but has several nods to that look throughout the season. He brings the charisma that he has and uses it in the most nefarious role I’ve seen him in.
They’re supported by a hell of a cast. Erin Moriarty, Eka Darville, Carrie-Anne Moss, Rachael Taylor, Wil Traval, and Mike Colter. Luke Cage is introduced in this season and Mike Colter plays him to perfection. I had forgotten that Erin Moriarty was in this when I was watching The Boys. This is a much more mature series based on a comic book. This introduced Moss’s character to be used in future shows. Rachael Taylor’s Trish’s entire story for the entire run of the show is set up in this season. She gets a taste of the power that Jessica has and wants to feel that way all the time. Eka Darville plays Malcolm and has to do a lot of heavy lifting. He has to deal with a lot of heavy stuff in his scenes.
The set design does a lot to sell the noirish vibe that goes along with the main character being a private investigator. The costume design is good, especially with Kilgrave always having a shade of purple on at all times. The effects help sell the powers that both Jessica and Luke have. The music that Sean Callery composed for the show is fantastic. The main theme is heroic and has a noir feel. Its perfectly suited for the character of Jessica Jones.
Season one of Jessica Jones is one of the best seasons of television that not just Marvel but also Netflix has ever produced. One of the most frustrating things about the other two seasons of Jessica Jones is how good this season was. This season came out before Daredevil season two, but I watched it in the wrong order because I forgot. The next show on the docket is Luke Cage. You can stream Jessica Jones season one on Disney +. I give Jessica Jones season one 9 bottles of whiskey out of 10.
