WrestleMania 38 – Night 1

Night one of WrestleMania 38 was really good. I’ve not watched the weekly product that WWE has put out in years. That has gone doubly so when they increased the amount of wrestling that they produced, because it was almost impossible to keep up with the amount of wrestling by watching it and do almost anything else. Its nights like tonight that make you realize why WWE was the only major player in professional wrestling for a short time.

The first couple of matches were honestly kind of filler. The SmackDown Tag Team Championship match opened the show. The team of Shinsuke Nakamura and Rick Boogs had gimmick gear themed after Mike’s Harder Lemonade and Tea. The Usos ended up retaining their titles after Rick Boogs was possibly actually injured, which sucks. The Drew McIntyre vs Happy Corbin match also felt like filler. Drew won but it really didn’t mean anything except maybe starting a rift between Corbin and Moss.

The next match was the celebrity match which was pretty good. Logan Paul is a good worker in the ring. I would say surprisingly good but that would be doing a disservice to him as an athlete. The Miz, Rey Mysterio, and Dominik Mysterio all support him and make him look even better. Logan Paul is a natural heel, which is the least surprising thing in the match. The swerve that The Miz did of turning on Logan Paul after they won the match was both incredibly surprising and not surprising at all.

The next two matches were honestly the best matches of the night. Bianca Belair and Becky Lynch had an amazing match. It is the exact opposite of the match they had at SummerSlam. Nothing I can say can properly describe the match so just watch it. The next match was the Seth Rollins vs mystery opponent, which was the source of all of the rumors heading into WrestleMania. It ended up being Cody Rhodes, returning to the WWE after six years of doing so much around the wrestling world. The match that Cody and Seth had was another top tier match. I can’t properly describe the match, but I think you just need to watch both of these matches.

As a come down from the two best matches of the night they covered the Hall of Fame inductees this year. The next actual match was the one that I was looking forward to the least. Charlotte Flair and Ronda Rousey are my least favorite people in wrestling. Charlotte because of her oversaturation of the title scene. Ronda because I was tired of how much smack she talked about the wrestling industry during her small break and then I’ve learned other things about her that make me like her less. Charlotte winning was the best possible outcome, if the winner had to be one of those two. The last match was Stone Cold and Kevin Owens. While more of a brawl than a wrestling match. It was a No Holds Barred match which Stone Cold won. He spent the last few minutes of the night celebrating and stunning Byron Saxton, who fell for the same thing that he experienced before.

Night one of WrestleMania 38 set the bar incredibly high. There was a match that was cut for the night but it was moved to tomorrow night. It was The New Day vs Sheamus and Ridge Holland match. Night two looks to have one more match than night one. It’s going to have a lot to live up to for it to even match tonight. I give Night One of WrestleMania 38 8.5 stars out of 10.
