Blade II

Blade II was kind of an anomaly for me growing up. I was kind of middle of the road on it when it came out overall. There were parts of it that I really enjoyed, and those parts I’ve only grown to enjoy more. I started enjoying it more after watching it more and more. That started even before I started being a fan of Guillermo del Toro, which caused me to enjoy it even more.

Guillermo del Toro’s fingerprints are all over Blade II, especially how the vampires are treated. The Reaper Strain shares a lot of similarities with the Strigoi from The Strain franchise. I know that del Toro likes the more monstrous versions of vampires because he wants them to be scary. The changes he made to the script by David S. Goyer were minimal. Together they made a fantastic superhero horror movie.

Wesley Snipes is amazing as the titular character. The only other returning character is Kris Kristofferson, well the only people the return as the same character. I say that because Matt Schulze was in the first movie but returns as a different character. The rest of the cast includes Ron Perlman, Leonor Varela, Norman Reedus, Thomas Kretschmann, Luke Goss, Danny John-Jules, Donnie Yen, Karel Roden, and Tony Curran. There’s an underlying Shakespearean tragedy with the vampire family.

I really want to point out how well the CG stands up after twenty years. There’s only one shot that looks bad after all these years. The practical effects look amazing and do a lot to sale the fact that the Reaper strain is even more monstrous than regular vampires. The stunts and fights in this are on a whole other level. A lot of that comes from Donnie Yen being the action choreographer. The music in this movie is simply amazing. That comes from not only the score by Marco Beltrami but the licensed music as well. There’s a section where they’re blended together, and it makes the already awesome scene even better.

Blade II is an amazing superhero horror movie that is so much fun to watch. The twentieth anniversary was just yesterday, which is why I decided to go straight to the movie. I’ll do the first one next and kind of do the Blade franchise like I did the Ghost Rider franchise, though I’d say these movies are much better. You can stream Blade II on HBO Max until the end of the month. I give Blade II 9.5 signet rings out of 10.
