Tremors 4: The Legend Begins

Tremors 4: The Legend Begins is the last movie in the Tremors franchise that I really know anything about. This being a western and a prequel was the only thing that I knew about it, but that’s a major thing to know about it. It has a lot of fun winks and nods to the previous movies. The Legend Begins is a lot of fun and is a western monster movie.

S.S. Wilson returns as the director with Scott Buck writing the script. The script was based on a story by Wilson, Brent Maddock, and Nancy Roberts. With both Wilson and Maddock returning as parts of the creative team helps make this film have interesting call backs to character moments from the previous movies. Them returning also helps make the new characters tie into characters from the other movies, though some of the casting does that pretty well too.

Michael Gross returns but plays Burt’s ancestor Hiram. He’s once again the only actor that returns but he isn’t the only one that plays a character that’s connected to the previous movies. Ming Lo, Lydia Look, and Sam Ly all play the original Changs in the town. Sara Botsford, Brent Roam, J.E. Freeman, August Schellenberg, and Billy Drago shore up the cast.

One thing this has in common with the previous movie is that the CG effects look less than great. That almost certainly comes from the fact that they both were straight to DVD movies. The practical effect that are used in the movie look great, as they tend to look. KNB FX were the ones that worked on this movie. Jay Ferguson did the music for this movie and it fits the movie well.

Tremors 4: The Legend Begins is a fun horror western that will be a fun watch for fans of the series. The only thing that I felt was a downfall for the movie is that it spent too much time on lingering shots of landscapes, which is a holdover from regular westerns. With that being the only negative, since it slowed down the pace, it seems a little slower than it actually is. You can stream The Legend Begins on the Starz app. I give Tremors 4: The Legend Begins 7 punt guns out of 10.
