Uncharted

I was initially wary of Uncharted and that was mostly because of the track record of video game adaptations. The adaptations tend to miss the point of what people like or take them to be too literal. This is one of the best video game adaptations that I’ve seen. This has the same feel as the Uncharted video games. I’ve only played the first three games in the series, but this movie has the same feel as those games. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it was able to adapt the feel.

The three writers, Rafe Lee Judkins, Art Marcum, and Matt Holloway, do a great job of handling the specific feel of the Uncharted series. The story was written by Judkins, Jon Hanley Rosenberg, and Mark D. Walker and the story lays the groundwork for the games. Ruben Fleischer’s past work of mixing action and comedy works with the style of the video games. All of the creative team was able to bring the Uncharted series by Naughty Dog to the big screen.

Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg anchor the cast, since their characters are the two central characters from the games. Sophia Ali plays another character from the games, which was a nice addition. Both Tati Gabrielle and Antonio Banderas serve as the antagonists. I really want to talk about Antonio Banderas as a villain. He can look so incredibly sinister that he can send a chill up your spine with just a look. Tati Gabrielle is a more present threat in the movie and is a fantastic antagonist as well. Holland, Wahlberg, and Ali all do a great job of playing established characters. Both Holland and Wahlberg play earlier versions of Nate and Sully than are in the games. Sophia Ali plays Chloe Frazer and you know exactly who she is even before she says any lines. She looks like the character straight from the games.

Most all of the CG in the movie is fantastic. There’s only one part where it looks off and that’s because of the lighting being too bright. With the amount of CG that is in the movie there only being a few scenes that look bad is amazing. The set design for the movie is on a whole other level. The score for the movie was done by Ramin Djawadi. The music that he did for the movie is just as good as what he usually does.

Uncharted is a fantastic video game adaptation and is just a fun movie. I don’t know if there are plans for any more movies or if this will be a one and done. I’m sure if this does well enough there will be a sequel. I do recommend seeing it in theaters so you can see and experience it on the big screen. I give Uncharted 8 heirloom ring necklaces out of 10.
