I recently decided to do a rewatch of Daredevil. It felt like it was a good time to do so with two of the characters being added to the MCU proper. This was either my third or fourth time watching the first season. I’ve been a huge fan of Matt Murdock/Daredevil for years and it was nice to see an adaptation that had a better handle on him as a character. This is still one of my recommendations for someone to watch on Netflix if they haven’t seen it yet.
The cast is absolutely fantastic. When it was originally being released, I would hear complaints about some of the members of the cast and not understand why. I always thought that both Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio were amazing in their roles. Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Hensen both are fantastic in their roles. In the first season there’s also Toby Leonard Moore and Vondie Curtis-Hall who are only in the one season. There are other supporting characters but all of these actors are the best from the first season.
The first season deals with Matt Murdock/Daredevil trying to find balance with his two separate lives. It also shows how both of his lives mix as well as how they affect each other. The introduction of Wilson Fisk alongside his cabal of powerful people as an antagonist for the entire season is interesting. The vague allusions to the first Avengers movie is something happen throughout the season. I’m gonna say the one thing that’s never really sat well with me, especially with it possibly being in the MCU. It never sat well with me that they killed Ben Urich. I always wanted more of him.
This is a show known for its fight scenes. From the oner fight from the early episodes to the later stuff in the other seasons, there’s always awesome fight scenes throughout the entire show. The first season set the bar very high with the aforementioned oner as well as the other fights in the season. There’s also what the stunt team did outside of the fights. They worked their butts off and you can tell by how good everything is in the finished product. That’s not even mentioning the CG effects used in the show, a highlight of which is the way that Daredevil can “see” his surroundings. Also the opening sequence is one of those that you really don’t want to skip, even though I don’t skip them in general, because they look so amazing.
Daredevil season 1 is a fantastic start to a series that set a high bar for the shows that followed it. With both Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio reprising their roles in separate MCU connected projects I can only hope that it means that others will get the same chance. I only hope they undo the one thing from the first season that’s never sat well with me. You can stream Daredevil on Netflix. I give Daredevil season one 9 hidden trunks out of 10.
