The Raid 2

The Raid 2 (2014) - IMDb

The Raid 2 is insane. I mean that in the best possible way, because everything from the first movie was amped up by five at the very least. I wasn’t completely sure how the first movie could be improved upon, especially when it comes to the action. There are several part of this movie that made me exclaim loudly and cringe from what happened.

Gareth Evans out did himself in this movie. The story is so much better this time around. The switch to a more traditional crime drama for the story made it more interesting. The way he edited the movie continued the focus on action from the first movie.

Iko Uwais, Arifin Putra, Oka Antara, Tio Pakusadewo, Alex Abbad, Julie Estelle, Ryuhei Matsuda, Kenichi Endō, Kazuki Kitamura all star in the movie. Iko Uwais continued doing double duty in the movie, as both lead and fight choreographer. He gets a lot more to do in this movie and he does a fantastic job of selling the emotion of Rama. The rest of the cast do an amazing job.

The Raid 2 picks up right after the end of the first movie. There’s also a time jump of some length the plot picks up. Rama goes undercover and that leads to another time jump. The whole plot is centered on Rama and his need for revenge. He’s sent undercover to take down dirty cops.

The fights in this movie are absolutely insane. There’s horror movie level amount of gore in the fight scenes so if you want bloody fights this movie is for you. The CG used to add the extra oomph for the gore is top notch. The music was done by Joseph Trapanese, Aria Prayogi, and Fajar Yuskemal. The score is great.

The Raid 2 is a top-notch martial arts movie with a great crime story. If you haven’t seen these movies you should. I can’t recommend either of them enough. I give The Raid 2 9.5 hammers out of 10.
