The Matrix

The Matrix (1999) - IMDb

The Matrix was a movie that just kind of appeared to 12- or 13-year-old me. I don’t feel like I can say enough about it right now. I hadn’t seen the first movie in about five years. It was long enough for me to have an emotional reaction to what happened even with remembering what happened. I have a fondness for the entire Matrix franchise.

The Matrix was written and directed by The Wachowskis. This was the first movie from them that I had seen, though I was aware of Bound. Though I think you were aware of Bound if you grew up in the 90s. What they were able to do in this movie would be incredibly influential to filmmaking for years to come.

I can’t really say anything about the cast that hasn’t already been said. I can’t really say that it reinvigorated Keanu’s career, but it brought him back to the forefront. I became aware of both Laurence Fishburne and Carrie-Anna Moss because of the movie. It also caused me to develop a crush on Carrie-Anna Moss, because she kicks a lot of ass as Trinity. I also became aware of Hugo Weaving, who was someone that I knew nothing about. He immediately became an iconic villain.

I honestly feel like I don’t need to even try to summarize the plot of The Matrix. People are aware of the plot and some of the inner workings of it even if they somehow haven’t seen the movie before. I do want to say that this is one of the most parodied movies I remember seeing. There were parodies of full sequences and shots in movies that came out for the next five years, at the very least.

There were so many breakthroughs in the making of The Matrix that its mindboggling looking back at it. The concept of bullet-time was brought to fruition in the movie. The CG usage is something that hadn’t really been done to that point. The use of wirework was also something that was new to Hollywood while the movie was being made. Don Davis did the music for the movie. The score really helps make the movie. I also want to mention the needle drop at the end of the movie because it fits the movie and the concept so well.

The Matrix is a classic in so many different ways. I wanted to go through the entire franchise, which I haven’t done in some time. I wanted to do a quick refresher before The Matrix Resurrections came out. The Matrix is available on both Hulu and HBO Max. I give The Matrix 9 spoons out of 10.
