I want to start out by saying that Free Guy is fucking delightful. I didn’t go out of my way to see it while it was in theaters. It was pushed back from the original date it had in 2020 because of the pandemic. It was pushed back a little over a year and it came out during the latter parts of pandemic. It ended up doing well in theaters and Disney wants a sequel, which would be interesting. I didn’t know how much I would enjoy Free Guy, but I ended up liking it a lot more than I thought I would.
Free Guy was directed by Shawn Levy. It was written by Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn with story by Matt Lieberman. I was a fan of several of movies that Penn had written before this. His work on the several comic book movies among other movies. I’ve not seen any of Lieberman’s movies. I had seen some of Levy’s work, mostly what he did on Stranger Things. Everyone worked together to make a movie that’s wholly original.
The cast is fun with some getting to do different things while still playing their characters. It stars Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Joe Keery, and Taika Waititi. Ryan Reynolds gets to be his usual goofy lovable self. This is kind of the role that he was made to play as an attractive goofball. Jodie Comer gets to be both an incredibly badass femme fatale as well as a soft-spoken programmer. Lil Rel Howery gets to be another sidekick that steals your heart. This is the most sinister I’ve ever seen Taika Waititi. He’s a special kind of mixture of sinister and stupid.
Free Guy is centered on the fictional game Free City. It is an incredibly popular MMO game that plays somewhat similar to GTA Online. An NPC named Guy somehow becomes aware of his surroundings and becomes enamored with a player character. This leads him to start acting like a player character himself, which also leads to the game becoming slightly different through his actions. This causes an uproar both online and in the studio. Guy and Molotovgirl, the player character that made him start his journey, work together to discover secrets of the digital world.
Free Guy is a CG heavy movie and it’s impressive. The fact that they made scenes from a fictional game, and it looks pretty on par to what games look like is impressive. It’s not a high-end game that they’re emulating but those aren’t always the most popular games. The CG is impressive for the crazy stuff that happens while in the game world. The music by Christophe Beck is good. The score hits all of the right marks while helping the movie land emotionally. The costume and production design in the movie really sales the world of the game. Each place has its own feel and distinct look.
Free Guy is an absolute delight. The fact that Disney wants a sequel from the movie means that the next movie will face an interesting challenge. I see it facing the same issues that Wreck-It Ralph faced. You can rent or buy it digitally. I give Free Guy 8 sunglasses out of 10.
