It took me longer than I had expected to actually get to watch this than I had expected. I was too busy keeping up with the horror challenge as well as just life in general. I finally watched it on Halloween night and Muppets Haunted Mansion did not disappoint.
I will watch anything if it has either The Muppets or Jim Henson company names on or around it. That goes even if I don’t know it right away, because I loved Farscape when it was on and had no idea at first that the Jim Henson company did the puppets on it.
The plot centers on Gonzo and Pepe as they go to a challenge in a haunted mansion. Gonzo is going because of the Great Macguffin, who had disappeared one hundred years ago. Pepe thinks that it’s a party and wants to meet famous people, among them “Bard Pitt”. There are musical numbers and jokes and Gonzo faces his fears. If you like the Muppets you’ll enjoy it. I don’t know how much is from the haunted mansion ride, because I’ve never been to either of the Disney parks in America.
The music is fun, that includes the musical numbers plus the score. Ed Mitchell and Steve Morrell did the music and it adds a lot to the spooky vibe of the special. The CG effects are okay, they’re not great but they aren’t bad. There are some that are pretty good, which makes the stuff that’s not as good look even worse.
Muppets Haunted Mansion is a joy to watch. You don’t really have to watch it around Halloween. It can be watched any time you want to see the Muppets and something that’s just a tiny bit spooky. I hope they do something for Thanksgiving too. You can watch it on Disney +. I give Muppets Haunted Mansion 10 pocket red herrings out of 10.
