Day 18 of the NOFS podcast 31-day horror challenge has the theme of hail Satan. I wasn’t what I was going to choose, mostly because I’ve been trying to watch things that I haven’t seen or haven’t seen in a few years. I was reminded of my eventual choice on Twitter by C. Robert Cargill. Anything for Jackson was something that I heard a lot about when it was added to Shudder.
Anything for Jackson was directed by Justin G. Dyck. It was written by Keith Cooper. I looked on Justin Dyck’s IMDb to see what else he had done. It looked like most of his work is Hallmark movies, mostly of the holiday variety. The same appears to go for the writer. After a quick look they worked on some of the same movies, which is how they met more than likely.
Anything for Jackson stars Sheila McCarthy, Julian Richings, Konstantina Mantelos, Josh Cruddas, Yannick Bisson. Sheila McCarthy and Julian Richings really get to have fun in their role as the grieving grandparents. Each of them really gets to play around how their grief is effecting them, and how that grief spreads through their world. Konstantina Mantelos doesn’t really get to do too much, but she does make the most out of what she does.
Anything for Jackson centers on a grieving older couple that are still reeling from the lose of their grandson. They turn to satanism to bring their grandson, Jackson, back. The grandfather is an OBGYN and looks for possibly targets in his patients. He finds what he thinks is the perfect target and kidnaps her. They perform a ritual for a “reverse exorcism” to bring Jackson back. Things spiral out from there.
The practical effects in Anything for Jackson are great. Without giving anything away the creature effects look fantastic. The CG effects look good too. They are mostly used to enhance the practical effects. They both look amazing working in tandem. Troy James is in the movie, and well honestly, I feel the need to point out whenever I see him in anything. The first time I ever saw him in The Void’s Instagram. The score was done by John McCarthy, and it worked really well in the movie.
Anything for Jackson is a movie that I enjoyed. I understand why it got so much hype when it was first added. I think it’ll be a hidden gem for people that get Shudder for years to come. I will give Anything for Jackson 7.5 upside-down crosses out of 10.
