The Devil’s Advocate

The Devil's Advocate (1997) - IMDb

I hadn’t seen The Devil’s Advocate but with it being on HBO Max and leaving at the end of the month I decided that it was the best time to see it. I’m honestly kind of glad that it took me so long to see it. I know that I wouldn’t have liked it much when it first came out, but that’s because I would have been 9 years old.

The Devil’s Advocate was directed by Taylor Hackford. It was written by Jonathan Lemkin and Tony Gilroy. It was based on the book of the same name by Ander Neiderman.  It stars Keanu Reeves, Al Pacino, Charlize Theron, Jeffrey Jones, Judith Ivey, Connie Nielsen, and Craig T. Nelson. Both Reeves and Theron do accents, but Reeve’s accent goes in and out. Outside of the weird accents they have great chemistry together and you feel like they care for each other. Al Pacino is something else, up until the last act he’s kind of a subdued. When he finally lets loose you can tell that he’s having a lot of fun.

The Devil’s Advocate centers on lawyer Kevin Lomax. When the movie starts, he’s a defense attorney in Florida that hasn’t lost a case. He’s approached at the bar after his latest win to go to New York to help pick a jury. After he does, he is taken to a law firm to meet with the head of the firm. John Milton, the head of the firm, offers Kevin a job. Kevin and his wife move into a building that’s owned by Milton. Before too long Kevin is given a big case and his wife Mary Ann starts to become isolated. Kevin’s mother comes to visit and there’s an awkward meeting between them and Milton. After Kevin wins the case, against his gut feelings about everything, Mary Ann is committed. Kevin’s mom, his case manager, and himself visit her in the hospital. Mary Ann commits suicide after seeing the case manager as a demon. While all of this is going on Kevin hears from his mom that John Milton is his father. Kevin goes to confront his father, who turns out to be The Devil. The coworker that Kevin had been lusting after turns out to be his half-sister and Milton wants his children to have a child together, so that they can give birth to the Antichrist. After playing along Kevin shoots himself in the head. Kevin is then brought back to the trial from the beginning of the movie. He announces that he can no longer represent his client. A reporter badgers him for an interview, which he finally does after Mary Ann encourages him to. The reporter then transforms into Milton as they leave. This synopsis leaves a lot of little details out so you should definitely watch the movie.

The CG effects actually don’t look all that bad for how old they are. They’re dated but they don’t look as bad as some of the effects that you’ll see in movies now. The music was done James Newton Howard. The score is really good.

The Devil’s Advocate is really good movie. I can understand why this is some people’s favorite depiction of The Devil on film. If you haven’t watched it and you have HBO Max I’d say you should give it a watch. I’d give it 8 screaming Al Pacinos out of 10.
