Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings - Micon Cinemas

Shang Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings is absolutely amazing. I had high hopes through a combination of being a fan of the MCU and martial arts movies. I didn’t really even know all that much about Shang Chi, but that didn’t diminish my excitement for the movie if anything it added to it. I really hope they keep making movies with Shang Chi, and maybe even add Iron Fist as a supporting character.

Shang Chi was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton. It was written by Dave Callaham, Destin Daniel Cretton, and Andrew Lanham with story by Dave Callaham and Destin Daniel Cretton. I’m going to use the names as they appear on IMDb, it stars Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Tony Chiu-Wai Leung, Meng’er Zhang, Fala Chen, Michelle Yeoh, and Florian Munteanu. Simu Liu carries the weight of the leading man so incredibly well. He honestly deserves many more roles as such. Awkwafina can do so much more than just be the goofball, she can act just as good as anyone. The entire cast is great, but I really wanted to highlight those two.

This synopsis will be all over the place and spoil certain things and not give enough info on other things. I will once again implore you to see the movie. Shang Chi follows the titular character, though he is going by the name Shaun, as he’s living in San Francisco. He works with his best friend Katy as valets and are underachievers. After being attacked on a bus, in which the fight is recorded, Shang Chi goes to look for his sister. On the place ride he tells Katy his back story. At an underground fight ring there is a fight between Wong and The Abomination, who received a closer to comics redesign. Shang Chi ends up having to fight his sister, Xialing. After the fight they are attacked by their father’s forces. All three are captured and imprisoned after going against Wenwu’s plans. This leads to them discovering Trevor Slattery and Morris, who help them escape and make it to Ta Lo to warn them of Wenwu’s plan. To skip to the end, Shang Chi ends up with the ten rings after his father dies and he and his sister save Ta Lo and the world. In the mid credits and after credits scenes, Shang Chi and Katy are welcomed into the greater MCU by Wong and Xialing takes over as leader of the Ten Rings.

The fight scenes in Shang Chi are all so great. To me the best fight scene until now was the elevator fight in The Winter Soldier and all of the fight scenes in the movie either are just as good or better than that one fight scene. The fight choreography as well as the camera work are fantastic. The stunt team just knock it out of the park. Joel P. West did the music for the movie. His score does a great job at making it feel epic.

Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is an outstanding MCU movie. The fights are the best I’ve seen in any of the movies. I do wish that it didn’t fall into the CG heavy finale like the other MCU movies, but that’s really the only negative I have for the movie. I give Shang Chi 10 rings out of 10.
