I was pretty hyped for Candyman 2021 after I saw the first trailer. I was intrigued because I liked the original. I avoided all of the other trailers though I was able to catch a shadow puppet video that Nia DaCosta had put on her Twitter. The video did a lot to help me remember that the movie was coming out, I only watched it once but it stuck with me. It was haunting and beautiful, and it was tied to the movie more than I knew at the time.
Candyman 2021 was directed by Nia DaCosta. It was written by Jordan Peele, Win Rosenfield, and Nia DaCosta. It was based on Candyman by Bernard Rose and The Forbidden by Clive Barker. It stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, and Colman Domingo. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is a great actor. It was great to see him in something that wasn’t superhero based. Seeing him play a more grounded character is nice after seeing how good he is at playing larger than life characters like Dr. Manhattan.
This synopsis will not be very good but will contain spoilers, so please watch the movie. Candyman 2021 takes place twenty-seven years after the original. You follow Anthony McCoy, an artist, that lives in Chicago. He shares an apartment with his girlfriend. They host a dinner for her brother and his boyfriend. They hear the story of Helen, the protagonist from the first movie, but it has become distorted since it happened. Anthony’s creative spark is ignited after hearing of the story. He roams around the mostly abandoned Cabrini-Green projects. He is introduced to the story of Candyman and how it ties to Cabrini-Green. Anthony does an art installation about the story. This leads to several killings and Anthony has to go to the hospital for a heavily infected bee sting. This leads to him finding out that he had been lied to about his birth. He visits his mother, Anne-Marie from the original, and he learns that he was the baby in the Helen Lyle story. Anthony is turned into the newest version of Candyman and is murdered by the cops in the arms of his girlfriend Brianna. The movie ends with Anthony turning into Daniel Robitalle as he kills the police that killed him and tells Brianna to tell everyone.
The effects in the movie look great. There’s only one part where the CG doesn’t look absolutely amazing, but even then, it still looks pretty damn good. The production design is just outstanding. All of the art and the exhibits look so good. The score works so well with the movie and it all just blends together for great atmosphere. The score is by Robert A.A. Lowe. Philip Glass’s main theme is also used.
Candyman 2021 is a fitting sequel to the original movie. I’ve heard people complain about “wokeness” like they’ve never seen the original movie. The movie ends with a website to help with the issues that are addressed in the movie. The website is www.candymanmovie.com/impact. I give Candyman 2021 9.5 bloody hooks out 10.
