This is of course my personal ranking of the franchise. I think tomorrow I’ll do a list of my favorite kills from each movie in the franchise. I’m probably going to talk about why I put the ones last that I did. Entries 3 through 10 actually tend to vary on the actual list. The top two and bottom two are pretty well set in stone.
Jason Takes Manhattan is boring. I know its kind of meme worthy because they only briefly shot in New York and the rest was in Canada. The high points are Kane Hodder as Jason and Julius’s death. A lot of the storytelling choices just don’t make sense. Most everything that is done with Jason seems out of left field. Its fairly well shot and has great practical effects and stunts, but that isn’t enough to help the movie. The deaths happen in chunks rather than being spread out.
Friday the 13th is a low budget affair. You feel it with how it was shot and the acting. There are long shots of not much happening, almost as if they padded the run time so that it could be feature length. For the most part the acting isn’t worth writing home about. Betsy Palmer is the exception to that. Her performance is nuanced and you can catch different things on each watch. The makeup still looks pretty okay even in HD.
Friday the 13th Part 6: Jason Lives is my favorite of the franchise. It has been for over a decade. There’s just so much to like about it. This is the only movie that has kids at the camp, which of course adds to the urgency and terror of the carnage. It adds another layer to the mythology of the franchise. This is also the most tongue in cheek entry and it does it quite well.
Friday the 13th Part 4: The Final Chapter is a lot of fun. Even though it was far from the final chapter of the franchise it does a great many of interesting things. It might have one of the most likable cast of characters of the entire franchise. The effects were once again done by Tom Savini and he is at the height of his mastery. This is also the start of the Jarvis arc of movies, which has the longest last effects on the franchise as a whole.
