Even though I had heard good things about it I’ve just now gotten around to watching Vampires vs The Bronx. Half of it has been because when it came out originally, I was doing a horror movie challenge and couldn’t figure out where to fit it. The other half is because of the sheer amount of content that Netflix puts out makes it hard to keep their shows and movies in the front of your mind longer than a week something of a miracle. That being said I can understand the positive things I heard, because this movie kicks ass.
Vampires vs The Bronx was directed by Oz Rodriguez. It was written by Blaise Hemingway with story by Oz Rodriguez. It stars Jaden Michael, Gerald Jones III, Gregory Diaz IV, Sarah Gadon, Method Man, Shea Whigham, Coco Jones, and The Kid Mero. I wondered why Sarah Gadon looked familiar to me, and it was because of Dracula Untold. Which is pretty funny if you think of it. The three leads are fantastic and they feel like they’re really friends.
The plots centers on Miguel Martinez or Lil’ Mayor as he tries to save Tony’s Bodega. There’s a company going around buying property called Murnau Properties. The name of the company will giveaway what’s up with them if you know vampire movies. Miguel, Bobby, and Luis band together to help fight the growing vampire threat even though most people don’t believe them. They meet Vivian as they go around putting up fliers for a block party to save the bodega. The trio get in trouble with the cops and the property company after trespassing. I’m going to leave the plot there just in case you want to see it without being spoiled.
The production design gives every place that you see in the movie a different style. You get the feel of each place whenever you’re there. Miguel’s apartment feels completely different than Bobby’s house which feels completely different than Luis’s Tia’s place. The bodega even goes through some changes as the neighborhood changes. The same goes for the costumes. The effects are great. The vampires look good and look pretty menacing. The CG is also pretty good. It’s mostly used for the vampire’s deaths.
I think you should checkout Vampires vs The Bronx if you haven’t already. It has really strong Monster Squad feels but set in an urban area. It’s streaming on Netflix.
