I want to start out by saying that I love Godzilla. Like I’ve been a fan for almost thirty years and I’m 33 as of writing this. This is another movie that I had planned on reviewing but by the time I got to it I was able to get it physically. I watched it on HBO Max originally. The only Godzilla movie that I don’t really like is the 90s American made one, the one with a good portion of The Simpson’s cast in it. This particular movie was almost tailor made for me to like it with Adam Wingard directing it. I’m a huge fan of his movies. It was also written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein with the story by Terry Rossio, Michael Dougherty, and Zach Shields. Most of who have been involved in the Monsterverse previously.
There are basically two plots that are kickstarted by an attack by Godzilla. The A Plot involves Kong and the Hollow Earth while the B Plot involves Madison Russell, from the previous movie, as she tries to figure out what’s going on with Godzilla and why he has become so aggressive. The A Plot follows Nathan Lind, played by Alexander Skarsgård, with both Ilene Andrews, played by Rebecca Hall, and Jia, played by Kaylee Hottle. The B Plot follows the aforementioned Madison Russell, played by Millie Bobby Brown, followed by Josh Valentine, played by Julian Dennison, and Bernie Hayes, played by Brian Tyree Henry. Nathan Lind has the biggest character arc because he starts out very opportunistic and selfish but by the end he seems to have grown at least a little. Honestly I don’t care too much about the human characters in Godzilla movies. Really the only thing that I don’t much care for in the movie is the conspiracy theory stuff that’s all through the B Plot. That honestly just comes from the prevalence of conspiracy theories in politics today.
The sound design in Godzilla vs Kong is pretty crazy. How the sound changes when you’re following Jia, who is deaf, is great. The same goes for when they transition to the hollow Earth, there’s so much that happens that I could probably write three pages all about it and not do it justice. The music is also fantastic, both the original music and the needle drops that are used throughout the entire movie.
The effects in the movie are pretty amazing. I know a lot of people were tired of only seeing Godzilla fight other monsters in darkness. I guess the only thing that was needed to change that was to add Kong because most of the fights are in the light. Even when the fights are in low light, they are lit with neon lights that give it a much different look than any of the other fights in the previous movies. Mechagodzilla looks good, but the design looks a little odd. It looks old, which is probably what they were going for since they can do more with computers than with a man in a suit. It does fit with the aesthetic of the movie and is just a little bit of a nitpick.
I really loved the movie. Like I said, this movie was damn near tailor made for me to enjoy. I’ve honestly enjoyed all of the Monsterverse movie. As of right now it isn’t back on HBO Max right now, but I’m sure it will be added back sometime this year. If you can’t wait you can either buy it physically or through your digital storefront of choice.
