Return of the Living Dead

The Return of the Living Dead (1985) - IMDb

So I saw this movie when I was like 8 or 9. I caught it super late at night on TNT Monstervision whenever they played movies after Joe Bob went off the air. It scared the absolute shit out of me when I watched it and I stayed away from it for the longest time. I just wasn’t prepared for indestructible zombies that both run and talk, let alone that they eat brains because it hurts to be dead. It was a lot for my young brain to process at like 3 in the morning.

I did eventually rewatch it and really enjoy it. I catch the dark humor that is sprinkled throughout the movie. They went to far into it in the next movie, which was my preferred movie in the franchise for a bit even though now it isn’t great. It was written and directed by Dan O’Bannon.

It all starts on July 3rd at 5:30 eastern time. I’m not really gonna go too much into the plot because its basically two kind of incompetent medical supply warehouse workers unleash the 2-4-5 Trioxin gas and everything goes to hell from there. The cast is pretty eclectic with Clu Gulager, James Karen, and Don Calfa starring alongside Thom Matthews, Miguel A Núñez Jr, and Linnea Quigley. I also want to point out Mark Venturini as Suicide, who I recognize from his role in Friday the 13th part 5. The cast has such a great chemistry. You really get the feel that they’re all just kind of barely friends and not everyone really gets along.

The design people that worked on this movie knocked it out of the park. The set designers were great and they even got in on the jokes especially with the vision test thing in the office. If you pause it you can read what it says, and that’s the best way to do it. The costume designers made everyone look distinct and made sure that none of the punks dressed exactly alike.

If you haven’t seen it and you want a very different take on zombies, that happened in the early 80s, you should definitely check it out.
