The Speed Movies

I rewatched the Speed movies for the We Enjoy Podcast. Well I had rewatched the first movie shortly before they said that they were going to be covering it on the podcast. I did rewatch the second one for the podcast. As of when this post if going live they’re covering the second one. They covered the first one last week.

I honestly don’t think I can say much about Speed that hasn’t already been said. It made Sandra Bullock a star and it kept Keanu Reeves a star. It also led to a new genre of film, for a short time, that would be described as Speed on a blank. It also has Jeff Daniels in probably the biggest year of his career, at least for a while. Dennis Hopper is amazing, as he always is, as the villain of the movie

Speed 2: Cruise Control (1997) - IMDb

I have a lot more to say about Speed 2: Cruise Control, which as it finally dawns on me that the name is a fucking pun. This is not a good movie, even if it is filled with fun cameos like Tim Conway. I didn’t remember much aside from leeches and the boat going through the dock. I also remember not caring much about the movie originally because it didn’t have Keanu in it. I also didn’t recognize Jason Patric without his amazing mullet from The Lost Boys. Upon rewatching it there’s so many people I recognize like Temuera Morrison and Richard Speight Jr. There’s also Glen Plummer who was in both movies.

Speed 2 is an incredibly 90s movie. This is the only movie that I can think of that has the term Computer Psycho, which would take on new meaning now. Both movies were directed by Jan de Bont. The first one was written by Graham Yost with uncredited rewrites by Joss Whedon. The second was written by Randall McCormick and Jeff Nathanson.

If you happen to have never seen the movies you should definitely watch the first one. I would advise against the second one. They are both on HBO Max as of writing this.
